EPFL - The Basics of Business Writing

This course reviews basic skills required to write effective business correspondence, including rules of grammar, punctuation, concrete language and vocabulary, redundancy, proofreading and editing. Participants will learn the importance of communication that is clear, concise, correct and convincing (the 4 C’s) and will examine current writing styles to correct, edit and develop into more professionally written documents.

Course Topics and Learning Outcomes include: homonyms; commonly misspelled words; confusing words, unnecessary words; acronyms and jargon; subject/verb agreement; nominative/objective case; infinitives; participles; parallel structure; active vs. passive voice; contractions; possessive case; and, collective nouns.
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
• Apply correct grammar to written memos and avoid mistakes
• Use proper punctuation
• Reduce redundancy in memos
• Explain the importance of concrete language and vocabulary
• Proofread and edit to improve memos and correspondence

“The Basics of Business Writing” and “Effective Business Correspondence and E-mail” are partner classes. You can take either or both.
