Wimba - FREE

Prerequisites: Learn How to Learn Online

Western Maryland libraries register here: http://tinyurl.com/SOM1-10AM

All other library staff register by emailing Julie Zamostny: jzamostny@washcolibrary.org

This course plus homework is worth 2 contact hours toward certification.

Description:
This is a two part, blended-learning style course that utilizes both synchronous online learning as well as self-directed work that you'll complete on your own time.

This online course will cover the W5: the Who, What, When, Where, Why (and How) of screencasting with the freely available software, Screencast-O-Matic. Not only will screencasting save you time and money when it comes to creating client-centered tutorials it will also provide you with an alternate form of communication among your colleagues and clients alike. Think of how time consuming it can be to create Word based tutorials to the library’s databases and other online services. Think of how difficult it can be to describe in words how to navigate parts of the library’s web site to achieve a specific purpose. Screencasting makes these tasks and many others much simpler, quicker, and more easily customizable to suite your clients’ needs.

At the conclusion of this part one of this course you will be able to:
1. Compare and contrast screencasting to traditional methods instruction in order to explain when screencasting may or may not be an appropriate educational tool.
2. Identify the strengths and weaknesses of SOM in order to describe when it would and would not be an appropriate choice of software
3. Compare and contrast 2 sample screencasts in order to identify qualities of a good online asynchronous presentation.
4. List the 6 steps of creating a Screencast-O-Matic screencast in order from start to finish.

Finding Health and Wellness @ Your Library: A Consumer Health Toolkit for Library Staff

Date and time: Thursday, September 9, 2010, 3-4PM EST

There is no charge for this webinar. Pre-registration is not required.

For more information and to participate in the September 9 webinar, go to http://infopeople.org/training/webcasts/webcast_data/414/index.html

To assist public library staff in building their capacity to provide reliable, quality health information, the California State Library, in partnership with the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Southwest Region, has developed a new, online professional development toolkit - Finding Health and Wellness @ Your Library: A Consumer Health Toolkit for Library Staff - with a primary focus on prevention and supporting healthy lifestyles.

This webinar will introduce users to the Toolkit and provide an orientation to the many multi-dimensional resources it contains, including core competencies, training resources, collection guidelines, programming ideas and promotional materials. The Toolkit is envisioned as a "living" resource that will evolve over time based on what we learn from its practical applications in the field.

Come learn about how this Toolkit can assist you in your own work and join us in helping to refine it. The webinar is free and will be useful for public and hospital librarians, library staff and anyone who provides health information to members of the public.

Speaker: Kelli Ham. Kelli Ham is the Consumer Health Coordinator for the National Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Southwest Region (NN/LM PSR). Kelli helps libraries and community organizations provide quality health information services to the public. Kelli develops presentations and training materials with a focus on health literacy, new technologies for delivery of health information, and services to special populations. Kelli created the Health e-Shows series of webinars in 2008 for Infopeople, covering a variety of consumer health topics for public librarians.

If you are unable to attend the live event, you can access the archived version the day following the webinar. Check our archive listing at:

Designing Customized Library Services: Book-a-Librarian and BookMatch

Date and time: Tuesday, September 14, 2010, 3-4PM EST

There is no charge for this webinar. Pre-registration is not required.

For more information and to participate in the September 14 webinar, go to http://infopeople.org/training/webcasts/webcast_data/398/index.html

Libraries are famous for their service, but it can be difficult to balance in-depth answers when time is always at a premium. This webinar provides two models for creating detailed patron service. Book-a-Librarian demonstrates a model for 1-on-1 detailed reference service, while BookMatch offers a method for crowdsourced readers' advisory.

We will examine how these services were set up at Skokie Public Library, and discuss procedures and policies for implementing similar resources at your own organization.

Those attending the webinar will:
• Understand the value of customized library services
• Learn about the function of 1-on-1 and crowdsourced models
• Be able to develop policies and procedures for launching custom services successfully
• Discuss how to use these services as a model for further staff development

Pre-webinar assignment: Before attending the webinar, make a list of topics your library would feel comfortable with providing on a 1-on-1 basis, ones you could stand to learn more about, and any you think should be off limits. We’ll discuss them in the chat sessions.

Financial literacy is one of the 21st century library competencies outlined in the 2010 IMLS 21st Century Museum and Libraries Report. The Athens-Clarke County (Georgia) Library has addressed this competency with the launch of a grant-funded program "Money Matters: Because Your Future Matters" aimed at helping GED students and others learn basic financial skills.

Join Trudi Green and Teri Hanna to learn more about this innovative and timely program. Come away with a clear idea of the benefit of such programming as well as ideas for incorporating parts of this unique program into your library's programming efforts using your own local resources. You'll even learn something about the newest credit rules!

Money Matters is funded by Smart Investing @ Your LibraryTM, a partnership between the American Library Association and FINRA.

12:00 - 1:30; SMRLA Training Lab; pizza will be provided.

SMRLA is pleased to be a viewing site for the College of Dupage Library Futures teleconference, Libraries and Mobile Technologies Landscape. Joe Murphy will provide an overview of the emerging landscape of information engagement through mobile technology. He will introduce the major mobile technologies and outline their usage as well as the cultural shifts that accompany their introduction into information society. Joe will lead us through an exploration of the opportunities for libraries to implement mobile technologies to enhance or supplement traditional services and collections, and will explain how libraries can most strategically engage these tools as well as the mobile culture. We will discuss the real world changes this means for libraries and the new skills we may have to learn in this evolution. At the conclusion of this session we will all be familiar with how to best meet this shift towards mobile technologies in our libraries.

Register by September 16. Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's Counties should contact SMRLA directly to register staff.
Other MD libraries can get on the list at http://host2.evanced.info/maryland/evanced/eventsignup.asp?ID=603&rts=&disptype=&ret=eventcalendar.asp&pointer=&returnToSearch=&SignupType=&num=0&ad=&dt=mo&mo=9/1/2010&df=list&EventType=ALL&Lib=0%2C+3&AgeGroup=&LangType=0&WindowMode=&noheader=&lad=

Dan Ream, Associate Professor at VCU presents his three-hour workshop on Social Networking in Libraries. Here is the description from his web site:

Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking web resources have become extremely popular with teenage and older Internet users and librarians need to better understand what goes on in these tools in order to better understand their clientele. Some libraries are actually creating pages and offering services via these sites. We will have an overview of how these tools work, how teens and college students use them, and see how libraries are attempting to reach their users via these tools.

This course is ideal for school, public, and academic librarians who work with teens and college students and parents wanting an introduction to how social networking sites work.

This course may help you decide if your library or organization should create a presence in these social networking sites.

Topics covered include:

Introduction to Myspace, Facebook, and other most popular social networking sites and search capabilities of each.

How college and public libraries are using these tools to reach their users.
